Breakaway King of the Oak uses the same mashbill as our flagship Breakaway Bourbon, distilled on an Arnold Holstein still. Where the flagship matures in new American oak, King of the Oak finishes its years in French Burgundy wine barrels. The wine-barrel aging is what takes it out of "bourbon" classification and into Whiskey. Each bottle is a single barrel, hand-bottled; the specific cask number and ABV are noted on the label.
Tasting Notes
Appearance Deep, dark burgundy.
Nose Layered red fruit — candied plums and baked cherry— over the soft oak character of long-aged wood. The Burgundy barrel sits underneath, adding a quiet wine note without overpowering.
Palate Fruity sweetness from the wine barrel meets the buttery sweet corn of the underlying wheated mashbill. Rounded, not assertive.
Finish Soft oak with a touch of spice. The Burgundy character lingers without going dry.
Closing note
King of the Oak is what happens when a wheated Washington bourbon mash meets old-world wine wood. Each barrel is its own bottling — single barrel, hand-bottled, every cask its own story.
